Orange EverGraze Proof Site Climate
The Panuara site was located 25 km south of Orange on the Central tablelands of NSW. The average annual rainfall at the Panuara site is 809 mm, evenly distributed throughout the year, although soil moisture is more reliable through winter and early spring due to lower evaporation rates. The average maximum temperature is 19.5°C and the average minimum temperature is 6.9°C. Winters are often wet and cold enough to limit pasture growth. Summers are warm to hot and with less frequent but larger rainfall events.
Further details of climate and variability throughout the Central Tablelands and Slopes can be found in the regional context.
Figure 1 and 2 describes the rainfall and Figure 3 and 4 describes the monthly temperatures during the Panuara experiment. The rainfall was variable over the experimental period; it was slightly below average in 2008 and 2011, much below average in 2009 and much above average in 2010. Both 2008 and 2009 were dry through autumn, while 2009 and 2011 were dry in spring. The dry spring in 2009 was also accompanied by very high temperatures during November and this caused a feed deficit at this time.
