Determining the distance proximity loggers record contact in Merino ewes

The use of remote sensing technology enables quantitative measurements of animals and their behaviour to be obtained 24 hours/day without the need for a human presence. Proximity loggers use an ultra high frequency (UHF) transceiver that transmits a unique code and receives and logs signals from other contact loggers within a predetermined distance. This distance cannot be determined exactly as the radio waves can be reflected, refracted and/or absorbed by a number of naturally occurring objects.
