Production and Environmental Challenges

The challenge in this region is to maintain or increase the perennial component of the pasture while increasing the overall productivity of the pasture grazing system. In the Warren catchment, the aim is to have 25,000 ha under perennial pastures to improve the quality of water in the river.

Innovation being tested:

Two new pasture mixes were established in 2007:

  • Paddock 1 was sown in June 2007 to a mix of Quantum tall fescue, Palestine Strawberry clover, Paradana Balansa clover.
  • Paddock 2 as sown to Whittet Kikuyu, Palestine strawberry clover and L90 lucerne on 15 Oct 2007.

Base pasture:

Results from the Innovation sites will be compared with non treated sections of the same paddocks that contain annual grasses and broadleaf weeds

Animal systems:

Beef cattle
