Production and Environmental Challenges

The challenge in this catchment is to increase pasture productivity while at the same time overcoming major environmental challenges including flooding, surface water run-off, groundwater recharge, sedimentation, excessive nutrients in water and wind erosion.

Innovation being tested:

Using kikuyu pastures for improved production and to overcome environmental problems. The goal is to have 100% perennial pastures and cattle in an area where annual pastures and cropping systems predominate.

Base pasture:

Kikuyu pasture compared to annual pastures

Animal systems:

Beef cattle
