Production and Environmental Challenges

The catchment has significant issues associated with, waterlogging, soil acidity, erosion (water) and eutrophication. These have led to significant impacts on both farm enterprises and high value biodiversity and water assets. The catchment has a variable but high rainfall (>600mm) and with a significant amount of out of season rainfall. This presents a problem to traditional pasture systems however a real opportunity for perennial systems.

Innovation being tested:

Resolute and Quantum tall fescue sown with oats

Base pasture:

Annual rye grass and clover based pastures with some kikuyu on sandy soils.

Animal systems:

 Cattle.
