Production and Environmental Challenges

The catchment has significant issues associated with secondary salinity, erosion (wind and water), eutrophication and soil health. These have led to significant impacts on both farm enterprises and high value biodiversity and water assets. The catchment has a variable rainfall and waterlogging can be an issue as well as out of season rainfall. This presents a problem to traditional pasture systems however a real opportunity for perennial systems.

Innovation being tested:

Lucerne and tall fescue in a sloping site partially prone to waterlogging

Base pasture:

Annual rye grass and clover based pastures with some tagasaste on sandy ridges.

Animal systems:

 Prime lambs and cattle.
