Production and Environmental Challenges
The undulating property of 300ha will be fenced into 28 paddocks according to land-class. The property is currently set-stocked with large paddocks where stock camps and selective grazing on the hills is evident.
Innovation being tested:
Rotationally grazing the site with cattle and sheep together will control the selective grazing as it will reduce the amount of back grazing that usually occurs when the mobs are run separately. This will improve the perennial component of the pasture, especially sustaining the native species, and also increase ground cover.
Base pasture:
Wallaby grass, kangaroo grass and microleana are the current native grass species. Non-natives include kikuyu and ryegrass.
Animal systems:
Beef production; Angus cows for annual mountain calf sale.
Wool production; Merino ewes.
Latest Results:
Most of the fencing has been completed with a rotational grazing system in place that is already proving successful in maintaining ground cover and providing stock with better than normal available feed. The condition and fat scores of ewes and cows have also increased which will enable tighter lambing and calving patterns this year.
