Production and Environmental Challenges
Provision of high quality feed for livestock throughout season.
Capturing some benefits from late spring / summer rainfall events.
Increased summer pasture growth will also dry out the soil and reduce water-logging. Higher density of perennials will provide greater ground cover throughout the year.
Innovation being tested:
Sardi 7 Lucerne & Stamina GT6 Lucerne to be used primarily for grazing.
Comparing production, stocking rate and profitability with a typical annual grass/sub clover pasture.
Base pasture:
Typical pasture for region has reduced perennial grasses present and therefore consists of annual grasses and sub clover. Response to summer rainfall is minimal.
Animal systems:
Prime Lambs. Winter lambing, most lambs sold prior to Christmas, with some shorn and carried over summer.
Latest results:
Very light sandy soil. 31 ha divided into 4 roughly equal size paddocks. Half sown to Sardi 7 other half to Stamina GT6. Sown September 2008 @ 10kg/ha with 100kg/ha DAP. Rape/Plantain sown spring 2007. Currently being grazed with shorn lambs.
