Production and Environmental Challenges

The aim in this region is to establish pasture systems that reduce salt loads and increase the area of perennial vegetation. Animal production will be increased by lifting the ovulation rate of ewes grazing the lucerne pastures.

Innovation being tested:

The four producers involved in the project will establish paddocks of lucerne on their farms. At mating in late summer, merino ewes will graze the lucerne for 7-10 days prior to joining. All ewes will be scanned to determine the effect of the lucerne grazing on ovulation rates.

Base pasture:

Dry pasture containing phalaris, and annual grasses

Animal systems:

Merino ewes
