Production and Environmental Challenges

The challenge in this region is to maintain or increase the perennial component of the pasture while increasing the overall productivity of the pasture grazing system.

Innovation being tested:

Two different innovations are being tested at this site;

Exotic species – To keep existing phalaris based pasture productive, control annual species such as Vulpia and over sow with other perennial species. Several species mixes will be used over the paddock and monitoring will look for the best mixture for the region. Cultivars in the mixes include Tall Fescue (Resolute), Phalaris (Australian, Holdfast), White Clover (Tahora), Sub Clover (Goulburn, Leura , Riverina, Junee).

Native pastures – A pasture containing Kangaroo grass (Themeda australis) will be treated with sub clover and fertilised, to enhance the production of the pasture.

Base pasture:

Results on the Innovation sites will be compared with non treated sections of the same paddock
