Production and Environmental Challenges
Establishment of perennial pastures with high water use on recharge zones to reduce salinity problems is high on the priorities of the catchment. The practise will also ensure adequate groundcover in summer and prevent erosion and evapo-concentration of salts at the soil surface.
Innovation being tested:
The new treatment being imposed is perennial pastures (SARDI 7 lucerne, Choice chicory, Sirosa phalaris, Porto cocksfoot, medic) on well drained black clay flats. These flats have become prone to sodicity. The treatments to be monitored include the perennial pasture mixes sown in autumn 2005 and in autumn 2007 and an adjacent paddock with annual pasture.
Base pasture:
The control pasture is based on annual grasses and weeds.

Animal systems:

Merino ewes
