Production and Environmental Challenges

The challenge in this region is to maintain or increase the perennial component of the pasture while increasing the overall productivity of the pasture grazing system. Soil salinity, low ground cover and wind erosion are major environmental problems on the island. Sheep production in summer is limited by the poor quality of the dry pasture. Kikuyu should provide a maintenance diet for mature ewes.

Innovation being tested:

Two different pastures will be compared with a control paddock at this site;
Innovation Pd 1:  Rhodes Grass and sub clover pasture
Innovation Pd 2:  Kikuyu and sub clover

Base pasture:

Control paddock is dominated by annual grass and sub clover pasture

Animal systems:

Merino sheep
