Production and Environmental Challenges

The challenge in this region is to maintain a native pasture with a high proportion of desirable perennials and reduce the proportion of perennial weed species.

Innovation being tested:

What impact do different species of grazing animals (sheep, cattle, goats) have on the persistence and condition of native pastures? Four paddocks will be compared:
• Control where the paddock will be rotationally grazed with sheep, cattle and goats
• Cattle only grazing
• Sheep only grazing
• Goats only grazing
Each of the treatment paddocks will be rotationally grazed with a similar frequency and stocking density of the appropriate livestock.

Base pasture:

Native pasture with diverse range of summer and winter active species

Animal systems:

Cattle, sheep and goats
