Production and Environmental Challenges

The challenge in this region is to keep African Love grass under control and maintain a diverse native perennial pasture. Currently, Love Grass dominates many pastures leading to a loss of native species, and a large reduction in carrying capacity.

Innovation being tested:

Two innovations will be compared to the existing grazing management which involves a mix of rotational and set stocking with cattle
Trial Site 1 – Control through grazing, fertiliser, seeding with cocksfoot and fescue and use of herbicides
Trial Site 2 – Control through more intensive grazing, fertiliser and use of protein supplements to encourage consumption of the Love grass.

Base pasture:

Native pasture with diverse range of summer and winter active species

Animal systems:

Sheep and cattle
