Production and Environmental Challenges
The Warrenbayne Boho ranges are considered as having a history and high potential for salinity recharge and discharge for the catchment. Current grazing practices result in bare hills that contribute to high sediment loads into the catchment waterways.
Innovation being tested:
Land & vegetation class fencing into 2 paddocks with appropriately placed & reticulated watering points
Interventions and inputs to influence pasture productivity composition & to increase frequency of perennial species.
Develop and implement skills for rotational grazing. Site holder & community training scheduled for August 08 ready for adoption over spring summer 08
Base pasture:
Hill Top: Mainly introduced annuals predominantly annual rye grass & brome sp. Some microlaena amongst rocks. Capeweed and erodium sp.
Rising slopes: Increasing levels of phalaris w some clover sp.
Gully: dominated by phalaris w other grasses and some clover, capeweed & erodium. Rush’s and reeds in the centre of wet gully.
Paddock No 1 – Hill. Unlikely recent fertiliser history and stocking uncontrolled as cattle from gully had access to the hill.
Paddock no 2 – Gully. Fertiliser history uncertain but likely to be an annual topdressing of superphosphate. Grazing would have been relatively heavy due to feed available in gully and lower raises w cattle having access to hill as no separation possible.
Animal systems:
Grazing is with beef cattle being mainly cows w calves & possibly weaners. Autumn calving.
